  • Speaker - Peter Wealick:  "The Vic-Maui Race - Sail from Victoria to Hawaii"

Peter Wealick is an accomplished sailor who has competed extensively in round-the buoys races and distance events including Southern Straits, Swiftsure and the Van Isle 360, and on a variety of boats including the J-24, Farr 30, J-36 and First 47.7. He has also competed in the Key West Race Week on a Farr 30 and has passaged the entire Saint Laurence Seaway, from Toronto to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Peter has a special touch on the helm, especially in light air, and is a calm and natural leader. He and his family also enjoy cruising the BC coast. Peter has completed one Vic-Maui, is signed up for another, and is a Vic-Maui race trustee.

The Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race, first contested in 1968, is the pinnacle of Pacific Northwest ocean racing. The Vic-Maui runs every second year, starting in July from Victoria and finishing near Lahaina, Maui, a rhumb-line distance of approximately 2308 nautical miles. The Vic-Maui race challenges sailors to demonstrate their skills by beating out of the Juan De Fuca Strait, reaching around the Pacific High Pressure zone and running the trade winds to Hawaii. The adventure begins during the long days of mid-summer and each day of the passage South brings warmer temperatures. Teamwork gets the boats to the finish line near Lahaina on the island of Maui, where day or night each arriving boat is greeted with an outstanding Hawaiian welcoming party. The 2012 Race was the 23rd edition and for the first time included a cruising division. This seminar will highlight the overall Vic-Maui experience, including preparing the boat & crew.  For more information, visit www.vicmaui.org.

Special agenda item: A vote will be taken among the membership regarding a change in banks.
