From left to right: Teresa Dobson, Peter Heiberg and Christy McLeod. Welcome!
TCYC and the Fleet Captain are currently seeking a boats to act as Race Committee willing to run one or two races each over the remainder of the 2010 season (final dates to be determined).
Please contact the Fleet Captain (Simon Hill at 604-733-9004 or shill_edit [at] telus.net).
If you are willing to act as committee for a race later in the season, drop the fleet Captain a line at your leisure, indicating which races you'd be willing to cover. Currently Ted Sharplin with Trigger (Cal 20 Race Committee) has volunteered for New Years Day, Fancy Free is Race Committee for the Spring Tune Up, Pegasus has agreed to committee the Passage Island Race and Krikkit will be covering some of the later Summer Shorts races (but not the early July races).
Over 20 members attended the AGM insuring a quorum and a new executive. Two guests were also in attendance.
The new Flag Officers are:
On the Board we also have: Treasurer & Education Ellen Fowler, Club Historian Trevor Jenkins, Director at Large Brian Ferris,Social Director Achilles Dolhaine
Special Tasks: Phone Chair: Carole Speck Scramble Chair: John Boyko VARC Liaison: Tim Coughlin Web: Tyler /Niko
With our small club it is critical that members look for opportunities to volunteer, whether helping out at the bar, phone committee, race committee or the Scramble we all need to contribute.
Our Fleet Captain's role is to organize the races, all racing skippers should expect to use their boats as race committee at least once per year.
Our new Commodore has issued a challenge to the Stamps Landing Yacht Club to participate in our New Years Day Race. The Commodore of the losing club will have to publicly wash the winning club's Commodore's boat.
Stepping down after exemplary service are; Roy Mitchell, John Bassingthwaite, Mary Brennan, MC Marciniak, Heather Wylie. Niko Lourotos did a great job as Scramble Chair in 2008 as well as maintaining the website and forum. Many thanks for your efforts, you made my term as Commodore a breeze.
Looking forward to 2010
I guess I was asleep at the wheel, but there seems to be a kafuffle brewing in Howe Sound. It seems the Artificial Reef Society is seeking a home for their latest acquisition, the HMCS Annapolis and are currently looking at Halkett Bay for her final resting place as an artificial reef (this after an attempt to sink her near Paisley Island).
The local residents and cottagers in Halkett have started a website at savehalkett.com that discusses the plans and offers feedback links to the powers-that-be.
Do members think that TCYC should have a stance on this issue and if so, should we be for or against it? Please weigh in with your opinions!
Here are the predicted tides for the raft up, for Friday and Saturday. We are on a large rising tide right through 2245hrs/ 10:45pm. As Alder Bay is so protected we can expect less 'challenging' rafting conditions than we enjoyed at our last on the water event!
If you haven't been into Alder Bay before, the charted least depth at datum on the approach and in the basin is 2.3m/ 7.5ft., and it is clear of charted rocks and obstructions, just stay to the centre of the channel.

What's John got to grin about in this photo? Well, the other two gentlemen just happen to be Design Coordinator Mike Drummond and Consultant Tom Speer of BMW / Oracle, who were in town on Friday to field test some super-secret, cutting-edge sail performance analysis device, which is being developed by a local group, including our very own Rear Commodore Rob Murray.

In this case "field testing" meant that John, Rob and Niko got to go sailing with the two BMW/O crew, around English Bay! The new electronics were jury-rigged on one of Rob's old jibs on Avant and - I gotta tell you - they worked great!
What can I say? We 're moving up in the world...
Take a peak at Swiftsure results. Only two TCYC boats made the trip this year - HARWAR and TIGER LILLY
Guess what? They both won their respective divisions :-)
This is totally interesting (if a little bit nerdy:-)
Fleet Cpt Tyler downloaded the BC Sailing PHRF list for 2009 and analyzed it by yacht club. Look at this:

Wow... despite out tiny membership, a full 10% of all registered, active racers in BC are Tiddlies! This is even more amazing when you compare it to Royal Van or West Van numbers.. What this really represents is a measure of how active TCYC members are.. we don't just join a club in order to find moorage, we join the club because we use our boats - A LOT
Here is another interesting breakdown

(a) Our boats are small (I could have told you that for free!) Smaller than the "big" clubs, smaller even than the provincial average.
(b) Our boats are slow. Ouch.. Well, not as bad as it sounds.. not "slow" but "slow rated" - which of course makes sense, considering that as of point (a), our boats are smaller. (What we really need here is for Tyler to calculate club Performance Values - a measure of boat speed, for a given waterlime..)
We ROCK!. TCYC is definitely the small club that could.. the yacht club for the rest of us.. the... [send me some good cliches, will you?]
Got him!
Ladies & gents, the proverbial bar has been officially raised, I am afraid :-)

The gentleman in question, is Mike Whatley, a.k.a. VOLARE. It would appear that winning Div 2, as well as beating most of the Div 1 fleet of the sailpast race, single-handing his 323, in full sailpast regalia no less, required such little effort from him that he also found the time to photograph himself in various gallant poses in the process...
Tiddly Cove will never be the same, again..

The first few photos of the raft-up album are up, in the gallery. Unfortunatelly, they're from the second try.. only 9 boats I think. We had nineteen boats (!) at some point, until the current broke us up..

Managed to get a bit of video, too..
The Sailpast SI's are up. (download)

(If you haven't found it yet, also download the latest sailpast boat order. Oh.. and you have seen the BBQ instructions etc too, right?)
If you need an extra body or two for the Sailpast, let's use this blog to make arrangements.
Those of you who do not own boats, have you arranged your rides? Are you still looking?
(*) Note: See, if you guys were using our Forum, you'd have sorted this out already!
The sailpast boat order has been updated - download it here
(TCYC is growing! Lots of boats this year..)
