Changes afoot in Halkett Bay?

I guess I was asleep at the wheel, but there seems to be a kafuffle brewing in Howe Sound. It seems the Artificial Reef Society is seeking a home for their latest acquisition, the HMCS Annapolis and are currently looking at Halkett Bay for her final resting place as an artificial reef (this after an attempt to sink her near Paisley Island).

The local residents and cottagers in Halkett have started a website at savehalkett.com that discusses the plans and offers feedback links to the powers-that-be.

Do members think that TCYC should have a stance on this issue and if so, should we be for or against it? Please weigh in with your opinions!

sailpunk's Gravatar I assume this would impact anchouring in a big way. That frigate is huge and the bay is small. I also imagine that it would mean that in using the bay we would be dodging diverrs. I
If that is the case then I say we get the commodore to draft a letter to the artificial reef society of BC.

Niko's Gravatar Hmm... I dunno if the "reef" is really an issue or that it is dangerous... I think the problem is that it will draw all sorts of "tourists" into the bay, who will disturb the peace of the local residents..

What am I missing?

Bill Coltart's Gravatar As a dive operator in the Comox Valley, we routinely dive the Artificial Reef HMCS Columbia which was sunk in Campbell River in 1996. I was not sold on the idea of sinking such large ships until I had the first hand opportunity to see the formation of these projects after a short time underwater. They are placed in areas with featureless generally mud bottoms and when one or two vessels do come in to dive on them they are generally in the area for 1-2 hours maximum and then off to another site. It should also be noted that the permanent mooring lines are what the divers use to ascend and decend during their dives, so the risk or notion that boaters will have to dodge divers is extremely unlikely. At any rate as a fanatical eco-tourism operator I must say these projects do appear a win-win.

adam's Gravatar I hope they dont put it in either of Halket or East Bays (where I think she currently is). These are the last two decent places to go localy me thinks! Then again, we arent the only ones that want to enjoy the area so who knows. Halket does seem very small for it though.

collaway's Gravatar I'm not in favor because this is a marine park, set aside to be preserved as-is for future generations. Right now it's a place where people can camp, kayak, anchor, swim, and if this reef proposal is allowed to happen the park will be mobbed with dive charter boats.
Since when are parks created for commercial interests?
How many other great anchorages are there this close to
Vancouver?
